VOLA – Pustervik

Danish-Swedish prog-metallers VOLA brought Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain) and Feather Mountain along for their winter tour, and CrowdSnapper caught them all in Gothenburg this chilly Saturday night.

VOLA seamlessly blends heavy, groove-laden riffs with atmospheric soundscapes, electronic elements, and soaring melodies. Their music draws inspiration from a wide range of genres, fusing the complexity of progressive metal with the catchiness of modern rock and the depth of ambient sound design.

With influences from a wide array of bands like Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Mew, VOLA has carved out a distinct sonic identity that resonates with fans of both heavy, melodic and atmospheric music.

The band formed in Copenhagen in 2006 and has both Danish and Swedish members.

Band Lineup

  • Asger Mygind - Vocals, Guitar
  • Martin Werner - Keyboard
  • Nicolai Mogensen - Bass, Backing Vocals
  • Adam Janzi - Drums

Harsh Guest Vocals

For their recent single Cannibal, the band's has also been collaborating with Anders Fridén of In Flames fame, where Fridén's signature growls make a nice contrast to Mygind's crystal clean vocals. For this show, they brought a different vocalist along for the harsh vocal duties, however.

Lasers!

VOLA's live performances are an experience for both ears and eyes, with a stage show that uniquely enhances the music.

CrowdSnapper got the chance to check the band out at Pustervik in Gothenburg, and was treated with a laser show that would make even Darth Vader envious!

Even though it's a Scandinavian band performing to a Scandinavian audience, frontman Asger Mygind did the small talk in English, between songs. There's a common joke in Sweden saying that not even Danes themselves can understand Danish, so it was probably a good move.

Photographing the Event

The show was arranged by FKP Scorpio, through which CrowdSnapper managed to get a photo pass. Big props to them for accommodating this!

There was no photo pit for this show, so everything you see here was shot from the crowd. It was pretty crowded when VOLA played, so I shot mostly from the side with about 80% photos of the keyboard player.
