Herrljungafestivalen 2024: A Celebration of Music, Community and Culture

Herrljungafestivalen is a free one-day festival held in Herrljunga, Västra Götaland, Sweden. Launched in 2022, it has since grown into an annual highlight for the town, combining live music with food, markets, and activities. By 2024, it had already established itself as more than just a music event: it was a community-driven celebration that brought together locals and visitors of all ages.

The festival is distinguished by its two stages and carefully curated lineup that balances emerging acts, local performers, and nationally recognised names. Unlike commercial mega-festivals, Herrljungafestivalen retains a distinctly warm and cosy small-town atmosphere, making it both approachable and inviting.

The programme reflected the festival’s ambition to showcase a diverse musical palette, ranging from local brass ensembles and indie folk to major Swedish hip-hop and pop names. The mix created a rhythm to the day: intimate daytime concerts on the North Stage and larger, crowd-drawing acts on the South Stage as the evening progressed.

Headliners like Tjuvjakt and Myra Granberg brought nationwide recognition to the festival, while acts such as Browsing Collection and Maxida Märak highlighted Sweden’s vibrant alternative and socially conscious music scenes. Meanwhile, emerging and local performers ensured that Herrljungafestivalen also stayed rooted in its community origins.

Beyond the Music

Herrljungafestivalen 2024 was not only about the live acts. The organisers curated a full experience for visitors of all ages, including:

  • Food trucks and food stalls serving a wide range of options throughout the day.
  • A bustling market with stands from local merchants, offering crafts, clothing, accessories, and curiosities.
  • Activities and games such as wall climbing, table tennis, video games and board games — creating spaces for fun and relaxation between concerts.

This variety turned the festival into a town-wide event, as much about wandering between food stands and market stalls or challenging friends to a quick game as about standing in front of a stage.

The festival area featured several food trucks. Perfect for a late night snack.

Community Spirit and Cultural Value

Herrljungafestivalen is part of a broader initiative to highlight the importance of culture, volunteering and youth engagement in small towns. The festival works closely with local associations and has often involved children and teenagers in shaping the programme. This grassroots approach gives the event a unique identity compared with many larger, more commercial festivals.

The festival’s free admission is another cornerstone: it lowers the threshold for attendance, ensuring that the event is accessible to everyone, regardless of background.

The event took place in a scenic park, surrounded by lush greenery. From the nearby park tables, visitors could enjoy a clear view of the smaller stage.

A Memorable Day in Herrljunga

The 2024 edition once again confirmed Herrljungafestivalen’s reputation as a welcoming, diverse, and festive summer highlight. With strong headliners, local flavour, and a relaxed setting, it managed to capture both the intimacy of a community gathering and the energy of a larger festival.

For first-time visitors, the event often comes as a surprise — a professional, well-organised festival hidden in plain sight in a small Swedish town. For locals, it is already a cherished annual tradition.

Looking ahead, the future of Herrljungafestivalen depends on balancing ambition with resources, but if 2024 is anything to go by, it has already proven its value as a cultural cornerstone in Herrljunga.

Photographing the Event

CrowdSnapper managed to get press photo accreditation to the festival which gave access to the pit of the larger Southside stage. Special thanks to the festival's project manager Jesper Jansson for giving me this opportunity!

Shooting the show was pretty straight-forward, and I was able to take pics from the pit as well as from the audience area. They daylight also helped getting sharp images. In terms of settings, I shot in aperture priority wide open (f/2.8) with a minimum shutter speed of 1/250s.
